I have probably spent well over 25 nights camping in the Yosemite backcountry, and I’m still not tired of it.
In 2025, I explored a new route that I had come up with the year before, traveling off trail to the remote Mildred Lake. There is no trail leading to this lake, which helps keep it incredibly pristine and peaceful.
Instead of camping beside the lake, I decided to pitch my tent a little farther away on a viewpoint overlooking Tenaya Canyon, with Half Dome rising in the distance. It’s a perspective of Yosemite that I imagine very few people ever get to see.
The night was perfectly calm, and as the sun slowly set, its final rays reached all the way up Yosemite Valley and lit up Half Dome in warm evening light.
It was an absolutely unforgettable night.
