The Wadi Rum desert.
This was one of my very first backpacking adventures, and still one of the most adventurous trips I’ve ever done. After watching the making of the movie Dune in 2022, I became fascinated by the landscapes of the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan and decided to try backpacking there myself.
In Wadi Rum, there are no real trails, and very few people have ever done multi-day backpacking trips through the desert. It took quite a bit of planning to put together a route, and I had to carry over eight liters of water just to get through the first two days.
On the very first night, I camped on top of a massive 50-meter-tall sand dune. At sunset, I looked down into this canyon and took this photo, which to me perfectly captures the Wadi Rum desert. Massive rock formations rise straight out of the sand, making it truly feel like you are on another planet.
