I came across this valley mostly by pure luck.
While hiking through the Dolomites in early fall, I had planned to pass just below Marmolada, the tallest peak in the Dolomites, from the north side. But shortly after starting the ascent from the village below, I realized that wouldn’t be possible. A few months earlier, a massive rockslide had seriously injured several people, causing the trail to be closed.
I quickly had to change my plans and instead headed into the valley on the other side of Marmolada to continue the journey - Valle de Ombretta. It turned out to be a very good decision.
The entire valley was filled with large trees turning yellow and orange in the autumn colors, and the trail toward the bivouac where I was staying was absolutely beautiful. All the while, the enormous south face of Marmolada towered directly above the valley.
