It doesn’t happen often that I have to turn around. Usually, even when conditions get difficult, I manage to push through. But this hike was an exception.
This photo was taken on the Dientes de Navarino Circuit on the southern tip of Chile - often referred to as the southernmost hike in the world. Located just above the Drake Passage, this island is exposed to some of the harshest weather imaginable. Strong winds, freezing temperatures, rain, and snow can move in incredibly quickly, even in the middle of summer.
When I started the hike, I knew some rain was moving through the area. But during the first night, the temperatures dropped below freezing and the rain turned into heavy snow. By morning, there was roughly 20-30cm (8-12in) of snow surrounding my tent.
I wasn’t prepared for these conditions. I had no waterproof shoes, no snow gear, and not enough warm clothing to safely travel through deep snow for multiple days. Still, I decided to continue toward the mountain pass, slowly pushing through the snow with wet feet while battling the ice-cold winds this island is known for.
When I finally reached the pass, I had to make a difficult decision.
I wanted to continue, but I knew it would not be smart. Once beyond the pass, there was no easy escape route. I would have had to cross another exposed mountain pass just to return to safety, and the weather showed no signs of improving. Being alone and remote on this island, I knew continuing could become extremely dangerous.
So I turned around.
Two weeks later, while still traveling in the region, I returned to the trail after most of the snow had melted. This time I successfully crossed the pass and completed the route.
Looking back, I absolutely made the right decision. After seeing what the terrain beyond the pass actually looked like, I realized how dangerous it would have been to continue in deep snow and whiteout conditions.
I took this photo during my second attempt. The first time I stood here, everything was completely white.
Despite the harsh conditions, this place left a huge impression on me. The landscape feels incredibly rugged, hostile, and untouched - which is exactly what draws me to it. It’s one of the wildest places I’ve ever visited, and I truly hope it stays that way forever.
