The Needles, Canyonlands National Park

This photo was taken during sunrise in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, one of the most unique and enjoyable places I have ever hiked.

Unlike hiking in the mountains - where you can often see far ahead and understand the landscape around you - hiking in Canyonlands feels more like moving through a maze. The terrain constantly hides what lies ahead. Narrow canyons, sandstone ridges, and twisting rock formations obscure the route, making every turn feel like a new discovery.

Most of the hiking here also takes place directly on slickrock and sandstone rather than on traditional dirt trails. Often, you cannot even see where the route continues a hundred meters ahead. Instead, you follow cairns and natural lines through the landscape, weaving between massive rock formations and dry washes.

At times, it genuinely felt like hiking through another world.

The towering sandstone walls resembled giant buildings, while the dry washes and watersheds became streets leading deeper into the maze-like desert landscape.

I visited the Needles District in the middle of summer 2025 - a time when very few people hike here because of the extreme heat. During most of the trip, I barely saw anyone else.

Conditions were brutal.

Daytime temperatures climbed to nearly 50°C / 122°F, making hiking during the hottest part of the day almost impossible. Every afternoon I was forced to stop, find shade beneath overhanging rocks or canyon walls, and wait out the heat for several hours before continuing.

But despite the harsh conditions, I would absolutely do it again.

There is something incredibly special about this place. The silence, the scale of the landscape, and the feeling of being completely disconnected from the outside world made it one of the most immersive hiking experiences I have ever had.
