I took this photo during my backpacking trip across the island of Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean. Madeira is often called the Hawaii of Europe, and I think this photo shows exactly why. Towering green mountains rise almost vertically straight out of the ocean, creating landscapes that hardly feel real.
This is the town of Seixal, which I passed through a few days into my trip. The peninsula almost looks like it simply flowed out of the mountains into the sea, creating this dramatic stretch of land.
Seixal itself is a very small and charming town, with good food and a small grocery store where I picked up some resupplies before continuing my hike.
To capture this angle, I had to fly my drone quite far out over the ocean, which was definitely a little nerve-wracking. But looking back, it was absolutely worth it.
To this day, I still think this is one of the best photos I took on the island.
