The best photos often come unexpectedly.
New Zealand completely blew my mind. In 2024, I combined several routes on the South Island near Queenstown to create an epic eight-day hike. About halfway through, I came out of the Dart Valley and crossed Te Awa Whakatipu, also known as the Dart River, to connect the Rees-Dart Track with the Routeburn Track.
It was a very moody morning, and while crossing the bridge over the river, I decided to throw my drone up to get some footage connecting the two hikes. Flying above the river, I pointed the camera straight down and was blown away by the complexity and beauty of the river delta below - something that wasn’t visible at all from the ground.
I live for these unexpected moments when I’m out in nature. Nature never seems to stop surprising me.
I love the abstractness of this photo. It’s one of my favorites from New Zealand.
