In October 2025, I hiked part of the Alta Via 2 route through the Dolomites in Italy. It was the very start of autumn, and all of the mountain huts had already closed for the season. That meant I had no choice but to bivouac or wild camp while making my way through the mountains.
This was the very first night of the trip. Temperatures dropped close to freezing during the night, but since the weather forecast was completely dry, I decided to pitch only the inner tent so I could look directly at the stars while lying in my sleeping bag.
From my campsite, I overlooked the famous Cir Ridge formation in the Dolomites. As the sun slowly set, the peaks lit up in a deep warm orange glow.
I did have to walk quite far downhill to find water before camping there, but it was absolutely worth it.
I would easily camp there again.
