Skógafoss, Iceland

This is Skógafoss, probably the most famous waterfall in Iceland. The waterfall drops 60 meters (197ft) straight down and is one of the most impressive sights along Iceland’s southern coast.

I took this photo right at the end of my Laugavegur through-hike in 2023. I started deep in the Icelandic highlands near Landmannalaugar and followed the trail all the way toward the coast.

I felt quite rushed during this hike because I wanted to complete the roughly 70km (43mi) route in less than 24 hours before bad weather moved in.

This photo was taken near the very end of the trail, and you could already clearly see the weather deteriorating in the background. Dark clouds rolled in while dramatic light illuminated the waterfalls cascading down toward the black sand below.

I launched my drone to capture the full scene, and it ended up becoming one of my favorite photos from Iceland.

Iceland truly feels like a land full of wonders, with landscapes unlike anywhere else I’ve ever seen. During this single trail, I passed brightly colored mountains, volcanic steam vents, glaciers, deep river valleys, green hills, and massive waterfalls.

Absolutely stunning.
