This photo was taken while I was hiking through Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, home to the world’s largest trees.
These forests are so lush, and the giant sequoias can grow to such incredible sizes, because of the unique climate on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada. The mountains act as a barrier to moist air from the Pacific, and the forests are frequently covered in thick fog, creating the perfect growing conditions.
I took this photo just as the fog began to lift. Sunlight started breaking through the trees, creating these beautiful beams of light across the quiet forest.
It was one of those moments that perfectly captured the peaceful atmosphere of the Sierra forests.
