This is Mount Everest, with Lhotse rising on the right side - the highest and fourth-highest mountains in the world, both towering well above 8,500 meters (27,900ft).
While hiking the Three Passes Trek in Nepal in 2022, I passed by Everest Base Camp. Although Everest Base Camp is a very popular destination for hikers, you actually can’t properly see Mount Everest from base camp itself. To get a clear view of the summit, you need to climb one of the surrounding peaks or passes.
In my opinion, the best views are actually farther west near the Gokyo Lakes area, or here near Cho La Pass, where I took this photo.
At around 5,500 meters (18,000ft), you stand high above many of the surrounding peaks, with an incredible panoramic view toward Everest and the surrounding giants of the Himalayas.
To this day, the Three Passes Trek remains my favorite trek in Nepal. The scale and ruggedness of the mountains there feel unlike anywhere else I’ve ever been.
