This is probably one of the most famous viewpoints in Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia, Chile: Base de Las Torres.
I actually visited this viewpoint twice. At the start of my multi-day trek on the O Trek, I stopped here on the very first day after arriving in the park. But it was midday, the sun was high in the sky, there were no clouds, and the lighting looked very flat. It was absolutely beautiful, but it didn’t feel nearly as dramatic as I had imagined.
So at the very end of the trek, on the morning I was leaving the park, I woke up at 3 a.m. and hiked back up to the viewpoint in the dark. For three hours, I climbed endless switchbacks through the mountains until I arrived just before sunrise.
The wind up there was icy cold and brutal. I layered up and waited as the first alpenglow slowly touched the peaks, followed by the first rays of sunlight illuminating the mountains.
That moment resulted in this photo.
Definitely worth waking up at 3 a.m. for.
