This is the Fanal Forest on the island of Madeira.
The Fanal Forest is an ancient, mist-shrouded laurel forest located high on a plateau in Madeira. It is famous for its crooked trees, thick fog, and mysterious atmosphere, and when I passed through during my traverse of the island, it was exactly like I had imagined.
The twisted trees gave the forest an almost unreal feeling, while the sunlight occasionally breaking through the fog made the whole landscape feel magical.
I decided to camp for the night on the edge of the forest beneath one of these massive laurel trees.
Such a beautiful place.
