I was fortunate to hike through the southern Colorado Rockies in early fall 2025. Part of the route I created myself, while other sections followed the Colorado Trail, including this stretch toward Durango.
For dozens of miles, the trail stays high above the surrounding valleys, following open alpine ridges through the mountains. There are long sections of up to 20 miles without any water sources, but in return you get these incredible views across endless yellow meadows dotted with evergreen trees.
I absolutely loved this part of the trail. The path was perfectly graded and very well maintained, making it easy to cover long distances while still enjoying the scenery around me.
It also definitely helped that the weather throughout this section was absolutely beautiful.
