This is Cascade Saddle in New Zealand.
During a multi-day trek where I combined several well-known tracks into my own route, I crossed Cascade Saddle on the second morning of the trip.
The day before had been a long six-hour climb with steep switchbacks and sections of scrambling while the weather slowly started to deteriorate. Just before reaching the pass, I pitched my tent beside a small creek where a group of kea birds introduced themselves and kept me entertained throughout the evening.
But after checking the weather forecast, I felt a little nervous. More rain and clouds were moving in overnight and into the next day. Still, I decided to continue, knowing that these kinds of conditions often create the most dramatic scenery.
This time was no exception.
As I approached the pass the next morning, clouds rose up from the valley and spilled over the saddle, creating these incredible formations across the mountains.
It remains one of the most dramatic places I’ve ever hiked through.
