Annapurna, Nepal

I took this photo on the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal, a trek that circles the Annapurna Massif through some of the highest and most dramatic mountain landscapes in the world.

This photo was taken during the climb toward Thorong La Pass (5,416m / 17,769ft), the highest point of the trek and one of the most notorious mountain passes in the Himalayas. The pass is known for its rapidly changing weather conditions, and over the years it has unfortunately cost the lives of hikers caught in storms or extreme cold.

To reduce the risk of bad weather and strong winds later in the day, we started hiking in the middle of the night with the goal of reaching the pass around sunrise.

As we gained altitude in the darkness, the landscape slowly began to reveal itself. Nearing the final section toward the pass, we were rewarded with incredible views of the Annapurna Massif rising above the valley - one of the deadliest mountain ranges in the world due to its steep terrain, avalanches, and unpredictable conditions.

At the same time, the first sunlight of the morning illuminated the dry brown mountain slopes below us, creating an incredible contrast between the warm light in the valley and the cold high-altitude world surrounding the pass.

After hours of hiking through darkness and cold temperatures, moments like this feel incredibly rewarding. It’s one of the things I love most about the mountains - the feeling that difficult conditions and early starts can sometimes lead to the most unforgettable moments.
